Dayton Beats South Bend 3-2

Cubs get nine hits but unable to capitalize, leaving eight runners on base.

DAYTON, OH - A night of missed opportunities led to South Bend losing at Dayton 3-2 at Fifth Third Field

South Bend got the lead off man in the first four innings against Dragons starter Ty Boyles but failed to score in each of the frames. In the seventh trailing 2-1, the Cubs loaded the bases but with two outs P.J.Higgins grounded back to the pitcher.

Dayton never trailed in the game as they used an RBI double in the first inning by Brantley Bell to grab a 1-0 advantage. Shed Long a solo home run in the fourth extended the lead to 2-0.  

South Bend picked up a run against Boyles in the sixth inning when Ian Rice belted his seventh home run of the season.  

Jesse Hodges RBI ground out in the eighth closed the deficit to 3-2 but failed to bring the tying run home from third base with two outs.  

Cubs starter Ryan Kellogg (2-4) goes six and a third innings allowing seven hits, three earned runs with no walks and six strikeouts. 

South Bend returns home to face Lake County in game one of a four game series tonight at 7:05pm on 96.1fm WSBT. Preston Morrison (5-3, 3.76) is on the mound for South Bend.
