Hawks Defeat the Ems in 13

June 20, 2016

Eugene, OR - The Boise Hawks (1-2) defeated the Eugene Emeralds (2-1) in a game that included 23 hits, 10 runs, 25 strikeouts and four hours after the first pitch at 5:05 p.m. Sunday night at PK Park. Manager, Jesus Feliciano, said about the loss, "Tonight was a tough loss…you just continue playing the way we are and I know we will win a lot of games".

The Hawks entered the sixth inning down by four run and ended the inning tied. Ems reliever Scott Frazier replaced starter Jose Paulino to begin the inning and struggled in his debut. After a leadoff walk to Tyler Orris the Hawks applied enough pressure to the Ems to scratch across four runs. Daniel Suero doubled following the walk and later scored on a wild pitch; the same pitch that struck out Luis Castro, who reached first and later scored on a Jacob Bosiokovic double. The last run of the inning came from Bosiokovic on a Santana balk.

After the offensive outburst by the Hawks in the sixth inning, the bats for both teams went silent. The Ems and Hawks had several chances to score late in the game, but relief pitchers from each team did what they are paid to do and runs were hard to come by.

A leadoff walk for Wes Jones, a one out Will Haynie double made it second and third. Campbell Wear hit a soft groundball to shortstop to Andruw Monasterio who made his first error of the season, scoring Jones. Finally, a sacrifice fly hit by Orris scored Haynie to give the Hawks a two-run lead.

In the first inning both teams picked up from where they left off from last night, struggling at the plate. The second inning for the Emeralds was a different story. A one-out, solo homerun over the left-center wall from Waldimir Galindo and a two-run shot from Jailer Peguero gave the Ems a lead that they held until the sixth.

In an Opening Weekend that featured two Ems wins, two extra-inning games and 4 homeruns, Ems fans are looking forward to an exciting season, full of hope.

The Ems will take the field tomorrow in Hillsboro, Ore, to challenge the Hillsboro Hops (1-2). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Manuel Rondon (0-0) will go for the Ems while Taylor Wright (0-0) will take the bump for the Hops.
