June 22, 2016

Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (32-36) grabbed a 3-1 victory on the final game of the first half from the St. Lucie Mets (35-32).

The Rundown

Ian McKinney (6-3, 3.21 ERA) got the win for the Cardinals by tossing 6.2 innings, giving up six hits on the evening, 1 unearned run, walking one and striking out five. The Cardinals got on the board early as they took a 1-0 lead in the first. Darren Seferina kicked things off by singling to start the game and then stole second. He would reach first as Cole Lankford grounded out. He scored on the very next play as Allen Staton would drive him in on a sacrifice fly to left. They would take the 1-0 lead to the fifth inning.

In the fifth the Cardinals grabbed two more runs. Oscar Mercado started things off with a double down the left field line. Andrew Sohn followed it up with a slow dribbler to the pitcher that he beat out. With runners on first and second, Steve Bean drew a walk to load the bases. Jhohan Acevedo struck out and Seferina came up to the dish driving in the second run on another sacrifice fly. Cole Lankford then singled in a run himself, scoring Andrew Sohn. The inning then ended on a pop up from Allen Staton. The Cardinals grabbed a 3-0 lead after five complete innings.

The Mets grabbed one back in the sixth as Champ Stuart started the inning by being hit by a pitch on a 2-1 count. Luis Guillorme singled to right advancing Stuart to second. Rosario then hit a grounder back to McKinney and McKinney tried to make the play at second, but threw it wide leaving the bases loaded for the Mets with nobody out. Kevin Taylor grounded into a double play and Mckinney ended the sixth on a strikeout of Wuilmer Becerra. The Cardinals would lead 3-1 after six.

The top of the seventh got interesting for the Cardinals, McKinney started things with his fifth strikeout of the game as Michael Katz went down swinging. McKinney then walked Tucker Tharp and got Jhoan Urena to fly out. Lednier Ricardo took Mckinney's 94th pitch to left field for a line drive single ending the night for McKinney. Cody Schumacher then came in and got Stuart to pop out to Mercado in foul territory by the visitor's bullpen.
