Faulty Fielding Fails Loons

Loons tie season-high with 5 errors, split series
June 26, 2016

EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Lake County Captains took advantage of five Great Lakes Loons errors on Sunday afternoon en route to a 6-3 victory and the salvaging of a four-game series split at Classic Park.

The Loons and Captains were tied 1-1 after six innings when Great Lakes committed three errors in a five-run 7th inning for the Captains.

Of the five runs, four were earned runs against Loons reliever Nolan Long (L, 3-7). Long put Lake County down 1-2-3 in the 6th inning but then an inauspicious start to the 7th led to five runs on four hits and two walks including a homerun surrendered to Midwest League All-Star Francisco Mejia.

Great Lakes scored first in the game with an RBI-single by catcher Jake Henson that scored Gage Green in the 1st inning, but waited until the 8th inning to score again.

In the meantime, Lake County's Willi Castro hit a long ball in the 3rd inning that tied the game at one.

The big 7th inning for the Captains started on an infield single by Ordomar Valdez who was scored in the ensuing at-bat on a triple by Bobby Ison. During the triple by Ison, Ariel Sandoval committed a throwing error that allowed Ison to score on the play. Then with one out, Loons third basemen Jared Walker dropped a popup in foul territory which prolonged a plate appearance for Castro, who eventually walked. Tyler Krieger then doubled to score Castro which was followed by a two-run homerun Mejia.

In the 8th inning, Omar Estevez bopped his second homerun of the season on a deep two-run drive to left center field that brought the Loons within three, but they were unable to muster any more offense after that.

Great Lakes (2-2; 31-43) is now 6-8 this season against the Cleveland Indians Single-A affiliate.

The Loons now head back home to Dow Diamond to start a seven-game homestand to kick-off the home schedule of the second half of the season. Great Lakes welcomes in the Lansing Lugnuts with first pitch of game one scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. Pregame coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM begins at 6:35. Righty Dennis Santana (1-8, 3.12 ERA) is slotted to start against lefty Angel Perdomo (2-2, 2.45).
