Late Power Surge Propels Giants To 10-5 Win

Three-run homers from Davis and Carbonell complete comeback victory
July 1, 2016

VISALIA, CA - The San Jose Giants hit three home runs, including three-run blasts from Dylan Davis and Daniel Carbonell during a dramatic seventh-inning rally, in a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Friday evening at Recreation Park. The Giants (42-36) overcame a 5-1 deficit in the contest scoring nine unanswered runs to secure the win.

Davis (1-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) and Carbonell (1-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) combined to drive in seven runs to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Jonah Arenado (2-for-5, 2B, HR, RBI) also homered for a second straight night as part of a two-hit game.

The Rawhide scored three runs in the second and two runs in the bottom of the third against Giants starter Jason Forjet to build a 5-1 lead before San Jose rallied. Arenado led off the top of the fourth with a towering solo home run to left center. The homer was Arenado's ninth of the season. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. followed with a double into the left field corner before moving to third on Carbonell's deep fly out to left. Ty Ross then hit a sacrifice fly to right plating Vizcaino to bring San Jose to within 5-3.

The Giants comeback continued with a run in the top of the fifth. Ronnie Jebavy led off with a single, stole second and moved to third when the throw from catcher Tyler Baker bounced into center field. After Robbie Garvey lined out, Davis grounded out to shortstop plating Jebavy to make the score 5-4.

Meanwhile, Forjet held Visalia off the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to keep the game close. The right-hander used a double play to work around a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth. Domingo Leyba singled with one out in the fifth and moved to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded in scoring position. Forjet then breezed through a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

Facing Rawhide reliever Nick Baker, San Jose's seventh-inning rally began with a one-out infield single from Richard Rodriguez. Jebavy then lined a single to left putting runners on first and second. Gabe Speier was summoned from the bullpen for Visalia and he retired Garvey on a groundout as the runners moved to second and third. Davis then lined a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left center for a go-ahead three-run home run. The homer was Davis' second in two games with the Giants and it moved San Jose in front by a 7-5 margin.

The seventh-inning rally then continued as Arenado followed the home run with a double down the left field line. After Vizcaino worked a full-count walk, Carbonell stepped to the plate and launched a three-run home run to left - his first round-tripper of the season. The six-run inning gave the Giants a 10-5 lead.

Forjet finished his night with a scoreless bottom of the seventh pitching around a two-out single. Jeff Soptic (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then kept Visalia off the board in the eighth and ninth innings to close it out. Soptic retired six out of the seven batters he faced.

Forjet (8-5) earned his team-leading eighth win of the year. Over a season-high tying seven innings, Forjet allowed five runs (two earned) on nine hits. He struck out six, walked none and threw 106 pitches. Forjet retired eight out of the last nine Rawhide hitters of his outing.

Baker (3-1) was saddled with the loss out of the Visalia bullpen after he was charged with the first two runs of the top of the seventh.

San Jose initially took a 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first. Jebavy began the game with a walk and scored with two outs when Arenado's deep fly ball to center was dropped by Colin Bray for an error.

Forjet began his night by setting down five straight Rawhide hitters. In the bottom of the second though with two outs, Dawel Lugo singled before Baker reached on a fielding error committed by Cristian Paulino at second. Chuck Taylor then smacked a double off the fence in right to score both runners. Victor Reyes followed with an RBI triple to deep left for a 3-1 Visalia lead.

The Rawhide added two more runs in the third as Stryker Trahan singled with two outs and scored when the next batter, Henry Castillo, doubled. Lugo then delivered an RBI single to left for a 5-1 Rawhide cushion. Visalia, however, would not score for the remainder of the night as the Giants mounted their comeback.
