Giants Hold Off Mavericks To End Skid

Eight-game losing streak snapped with 4-3 victory over High Desert
July 19, 2016

ADELANTO, CA - Jason Forjet tossed six effective innings and Tyler Cyr withstood High Desert's furious rally in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-3 Giants victory over the Mavericks on Tuesday afternoon at Heritage Field. The win snapped San Jose's (49-47) season-high eight-game losing streak.

Forjet (9-7) allowed just three hits and one run during his six-inning performance to pick-up his team-leading ninth win of the season. The right-hander, who retired the first 12 batters of his start, struck out five and did not issue a walk.

The Giants took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth before the Mavericks scored twice to close within a run. Cyr though struck out Tripp Martin with the potential tying and winning runs on base to seal the victory. With the win, San Jose salvages the final game of the four-game series and finishes their Southern California road trip with a 1-7 record.

Jose Vizcaino, Jr. (3-for-4) had three singles and scored twice to lead the Giants at the plate. T.J. Bennett (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also had a multi-hit game.

San Jose never trailed in the game scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings against High Desert starter Collin Wiles to take a 2-0 lead. With two outs in the top of the third, a throwing error committed by Martin at third allowed Ronnie Jebavy to reach base safely. Ehire Adrianza then smacked a double into the right field corner to plate Jebavy with the first run of the contest.

An inning later, consecutive singles from Vizcaino and Bennett put runners on the corners with one out. After Cristian Paulino flied out to shallow left, Ty Ross laced a single into left scoring Vizcaino for a 2-0 advantage.

Meanwhile, Forjet did not allow a baserunner over the first four innings. The Giants starter struck out one batter each in the second and third innings before needing just seven pitches to work through the bottom of the fourth.

The Mavericks finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth as Luke Tendler led off with a home run to deep right. The homer, Tendler's 14th of the season, cut the San Jose lead in half at 2-1. David Lyon then reached on an infield single before moving to second on a wild pitch. Forjet though prevented further damage as he set down Jairo Beras on a fly out to left, struck out Martin and retired Kevin Torres on a groundout.

The Giants then got the run right back in the top of the sixth. Dylan Davis led off with a single before taking second on Vizcaino's groundout. After Bennett struck out, Paulino lined an RBI single to left to make it 3-1.

Forjet finished his outing with a scoreless bottom of the sixth pitching around a two-out single. D.J. Snelten (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then breezed through a seven-pitch, 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to maintain the two-run advantage.

San Jose scored their fourth and final run of the day in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Vizcaino singled and then scored from first when Bennett ripped a double into the left center field gap.

Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) set down the side in order in the bottom of the eighth - the sixth 1-2-3 inning by a Giants pitcher in the game.

With the score still 4-1, Cyr then entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the ninth and promptly allowed back-to-back singles to Jose Cardona and Josh Morgan. Cyr recovered with consecutive strikeouts of Scott Heineman and Tendler, but then allowed an RBI single to Lyon as the Mavericks pulled within 4-2. Pinch-hitter Travis Demeritte followed with a line drive RBI single into right center plating Morgan to make it 4-3. The hit also advanced Lyon, the potential tying run, to third. Cyr though settled down and struck out Martin on three pitches to end the game.

Cyr (1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO) earned his first save with the Giants.

Wiles (2-5) was saddled with the loss after yielding three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked none.
