Missions Walk Off 'Hounds again
Rocky Gale's walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th delivered San Antonio to another 3-2 win over Midland Saturday night at Wolff Stadium.
Saturday night's contest featured some early offense, beginning in the bottom of the first when Jose Rondon's run-producing groundout off righty Daniel Gossett gave the Missions a 1-0 lead.
San Antonio starter Dinelson Lamet, who struck out the side in the first, allowed Midland to tie the game at one in the second on Danny Oh's two-out single to left.
The Missions went back on top in the bottom of the frame courtesy of River Stevens' RBI single up the middle.
In the top of the fifth, Midland tied the game at two when Josh Rodriguez doubled, moved to third on a Lamet wild pitch and then scored on a passed ball by Gale.
Lamet was once again very solid overall for San Antonio, allowing just the two runs on six hits and two walks, while fanning eight over five and two-thirds innings. The eight strikeouts were one shy of his career high.
Gossett was very good as well, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and no walks, while punching out seven over seven innings.
Like many games recently between the South Division rivals, Saturday's contest morphed into a battle of pens. San Antonio's bullpen trio of Brad Wieck, Jose Torres and Jason Jester (1-1) was sensational, allowing just two hits and one walk over a combined five and a third innings.
Their clutch pitching paved away for another late Missions rally.
In the bottom of the 11th against Trey Cochran-Gill, Friday night's hero, Gabriel Quintana, opened with a single to left center. Cochran-Gill (4-4) responded with two outs as the game looked to be heading further into the Alamo City night. With Gale now batting, Quintana got himself in scoring position by stealing second. Gale then ended the game of three hours, twenty-six minutes when he ripped a single down the right-field line.
San Antonio (14-15, 36-63) wraps up its four-game series against Midland (19-10, 52-47) Sunday with first pitch slated for 6:05 PM. Walker Lockett (0-1, 6.35) will get the ball for the Missions in just his second start at the Double-A level. The RockHounds counter with southpaw Brandon Mann (1-0, 1.46).
