Cesar Valdez picks up his 10th win in Grizzlies 3-2 victory
The Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Las Vegas 51s 3-2 Friday night from Cashman Field. Fresno starter Cesar Valdez (10-1) earned the win after he dazzled for six innings, allowing two runs (earned), on nine hits, walking one and punching out five. Las Vegas starter Robert Gsellman (1-5) suffered the defeat after twirling seven and one-third innings, allowing three runs (earned), on eight hits, while striking out seven.
Fresno took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Tony Kemp laced a two-run single to left-center, scoring Colin Moran and Andrew Aplin.
The 51s cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second when Nevin Ashley hit a RBI groundout to second.
Jon Kemmer (3-for-4) extended the Grizzlies' lead to 3-1 in the top of the third when he destroyed a pitch to left. It was his 12th longball of the season. Kemmer ended a triple shy of the cycle in the win.
Las Vegas made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Ashley flew out to right, scoring T.J. Rivera (2-for-4). Ashley supplied both the RBI and Rivera scored both times for the 51s.
Grizzlies' relievers combined for three shutout innings. Jandel Gustave worked two innings, striking out a pair. Jordan Jankowski secured his fourth save of the season after allowing one hit in the ninth.
Fresno improved to 21-14 in one-run games and 5-1 in August.
The two teams meet for the finale of the five-game series Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PT. Fresno RHP Edison Frias (1-1, 6.00) toes the rubber with Las Vegas RHP Josh Zeid (1-1, 3.75).
