August 11, 2016

Auburn, NY - The Connecticut Tigers shutout the Auburn Doubledays 5-0 tonight to earn a series sweep on the road, the Tigers first of the season. The Tigers also logged their fourth shutout of the season on the arms of Kyle Funkhouser and Ryan Castellanos.

For the third straight game the Tigers tallied at least a run in the first inning. With runners at the corners and one away, Blaise Salter beat out a potential double play ball to third base to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning it was Salter again, driving in Savage from second base on an RBI single, pushing the Tigers lead to 2-0.

For the third straight start Kyle Funkhouser notched a scoreless outing. Tonight, Funkhouser pitched three innings, scattering two hits and striking out a season-high five hitters. Funkhouser has a streak of 10 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

The Tigers added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to make it 4-0 Tigers. Hunter Swilling doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a base-hit from Daniel Woodrow that got away from the shortstop, allowing Swilling to take the extra base. Cole Bauml logged his third hit of the game with an RBI single into shallow centerfield that was knocked down by the shortstop but didn't have a play.

In the ninth inning, Hunter Swilling capped the scoring with his first professional home run out to left field. The solo shot made it a 5-0 Connecticut lead.

Ryan Castellanos collected his New York-Penn League leading seven win of the season. Pitching six shutout innings, allowing just four hits, did not issue a walk and struck out three. Castellanos coaxed the Doubledays into two double play balls that killed potential rallies.
