Late Rally Falls Short in 8-7 Loss to BayBears

August 14, 2016

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits launched a late comeback but ultimately came up short for the first time in the series falling 8-7 to the Mobile BayBears on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Chris Kirsch (6-6) was making his 22nd start of the year for the Butter and Blue, and the Biscuits provided the southpaw with a 2-0 lead after an RBI-single by Patrick Leonard in the first and a solo home run by Jake DePew, who extended his on-base streak to ten games, in the second. But the BayBears would battle back with a Chuck Taylor sac fly in the third and a double steal in the fourth to tie the game at two.

Mobile would take the lead for good in the fifth thanks to another sac fly by Kevin Cron and a Dawel Lugo RBI-single, as the BayBears went on to score eight unanswered runs, capping it off with a two-run Travis Denker home run in the eighth off Jared Mortensen to make it 8-2.

Willy Adames would lead off the bottom of the eighth with his 11th home run of the season though, and a Cade Gotta two-run triple cut the deficit to three. Pat Blair and Kean Wong then came through with back-to-back RBI-singles to make it 8-7, before Matt Stites came on and got Granden Goetzman to ground out, and then sent the Biscuits down in order in the ninth to seal the save and the victory.

The Biscuits still lead the Chattanooga Lookouts by a game in the Wild Card race, and will try to end the series on a high note in the Monday night finale at 7:05 PM with Hunter Wood (4-1), making his first start since breaking his thumb on June 23, taking on Vincente Campos (1-1).
