Express Snag Late 3-2 Victory over Sky Sox

Drew Robinson's Eighth Inning Double Sparks Win
August 23, 2016

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Back-to-back extra-base hits from DH Preston Beck and LF Drew Robinson gave the Round Rock Express (65-66) a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (62-64) in Tuesday night's series finale at Dell Diamond.

E-Train LHP Dario Alvarez (2-1, 7.33) earned the win after surrendering just one hit in a scoreless eighth inning of relief. Sky Sox RHP Damien Magnifico (6-7, 3.22) suffered the loss by virtue of giving up the game-winning run in the eighth.

In his first game back at Dell Diamond since being traded from the Texas Rangers to the Milwaukee Brewers, former Express and current Sky Sox CF Lewis Brinson connected on the second pitch of the night, lining a shot onto the berm in left field to give his team a quick 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled their advantage in the third as LF Eric Young, Jr. collected a leadoff triple before scoring on an ensuing Brandon Macias groundout.

Round Rock C Brett Nicholas leveled the game with one swing of the bat in the top of the fourth. SS Hanser Alberto notched a one-out single and took second base on an error by Sky Sox RF Michael Reed. Nicholas then stepped to the plate and launched a two-run shot into the Express bullpen in left-center field.

Rehabbing Texas Rangers RHP Tanner Scheppers took over for starter RHP Austin Bibens-Dirkx in the seventh inning. Scheppers surrendered a one-out double to Young, who then advanced to third on a throwing error by LF Carlos Gomez. Facing a runner on third and just one out, Scheppers responded by striking out Macias and Brinson in consecutive order. The righty tossed 20 total pitches in the rehab appearance, with 12 landing in the strike zone.

The Express jumped ahead in the bottom of the eighth. Beck lined a one-out triple to deep center field before Robinson followed up with an RBI double that dropped in the far corner of right field, giving Round Rock their first lead of the night at 3-2. RHP Francisco Mendoza worked around a leadoff single in the eighth, earning his seventh save of the season.

The E-Train now disembarks for its last road trip of the 2016 season. Round Rock and New Orleans will open a five-game set on Wednesday evening with Express RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez (8-8, 4.72) set to do battle against Zephyrs RHP Dylan Axelrod (8-6, 3.74). First pitch at Zephyr Field is set for 6:00 p.m.
