August 27, 2016

DES MOINES, IA - The Chicago Cubs assigned right-hander Joe Smith to Triple-A Iowa as a part of an injury rehabilitation assignment today. Outfielder Albert Almora Jr. was also activated from the disabled list and infielder Stephen Bruno was placed on the temporary inactive list.

Smith was traded from the Los Angeles Angels to the Cubs on August 1 for Jesus Castillo. He appeared in just six games for Chicago and posted a 7.36 ERA in 3.2 innings before he was sidelined on Aug. 17 with a left hamstring strain. In 41.1 total innings between Los Angeles and Chicago this season, Smith is 1-4 with a 4.14 ERA.

Almora Jr. was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 14 (retro to Aug. 11) with a thumb injury suffered on a diving defensive play. In 71 games with Iowa this season, he is batting .309 with four homers and 40 RBI.

Iowa and Omaha play game three of the four-game series at 7:08 tonight at Principal Park. For more information or tickets visit www.iowacubs.com.
