August 31, 2016

ZEBULON, NC - Matt Withrow set a new career high with 11 strikeouts while leading the Mudcats to a 3-2 victory against the Blue Rocks at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night. Sean Godfrey and Keith Curcio were both 2-for-4 with a run in the Carolina home win.

Withrow (9-6, 3.80) struck out four straight to start the game and then struck out five straight between the third and fifth. He later finished his career night with a bases loaded strikeout to end the sixth while improving to 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA over six starts in August.

Carolina (48-87, 19-46) gave him an early lead to work with after scoring once in the fourth and twice more in the sixth against Wilmington (51-83, 24-41) starter Matt Tenuta. Tenuta (7-10, 5.26) allowed all three Carolina runs and suffered this loss while pitching through the sixth. He also finished with a walk and a strikeout.

Curcio doubled and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Edgerton to give Carolina a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Edgerton and Godfrey then went back-to-back with doubles in the sixth and both scored in the frame while helping Carolina to a 3-0 lead. Curcio, Godfrey and Luis Valenzuela each had two hits for the Mudcats in the home win.

Edgerton was 1-for-3 with a run and one RBI. Godfrey had two hits, scored once and drove in one. Curcio had a double in the fourth, tripled in seventh and scored once for the Mudcats.

Withrow struck out 11 while working through six plus and into the seventh on 94 pitches (66 strikes). He left the game with two runners on in the seventh, but with Carolina leading 3-0. Zach Quintana followed Withrow out of the pen and allowed both inherited runners to score, thus closing Withrow's line at six innings, four hits, two runs, two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Quintana later finished the rest of the seventh unscathed and worked through a scoreless eighth while earning his fourth hold of the season. Carlos Salazar (S, 1) later pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout and earned his first save.
