Chihuahuas in the Dominican Winter League

November 16, 2016

It is common for Triple-A players to join foreign Winter League rosters as a way to stay sharp, make additional income and audition for future jobs. Here are the former El Paso Chihuahuas who are currently playing in the Dominican Winter League:

Yeison Asencio is an outfielder for Toros del Este. The Dominican Republic native wore a Chihuahuas uniform for parts of the 2014 and 2016 seasons. Winter Stats

Carlos Asuaje is playing third base for Leones del Escogido after his memorable 2016 season that included a Triple-A All-Star Game appearance and his Major League debut. Winter Stats

Frank Garces is part of the Toros del Este bullpen. He pitched as a starter and a reliever over the past two seasons with El Paso. Winter Stats

Hector Gomez is the third baseman for Toros del Este after spending the regular season in Korea. Gomez joined El Paso late in the 2015 season and hit .358 in 29 games to help the Chihuahuas reach their first playoff berth. Winter Stats

Diego Goris is playing third base for Aguilas Cibaenas after excelling for the Chihuahuas in their 2016 championship run. Goris was the only El Paso player to collect hits in all eight Pacific Coast League playoff games. Winter Stats

Keith Hessler is pitching for Gigantes del Cibao after dividing the 2016 regular season between the Arizona Diamondbacks, Double-A Mobile BayBears, San Diego Padres and El Paso. Winter Stats

Rymer Liriano is an outfielder on the Tigres del Licey roster. He is back on the field after being hit in the face by a Spring Training pitch in March 2016, forcing him to miss the entire season. Liriano played for El Paso in 2014 and 2015 and was recently claimed on waivers by the Chicago White Sox from the Milwaukee Brewers. Winter Stats

Manuel Margot is suiting up for Toros del Este after a notable regular season that included a selection to the MLB All-Star Futures Game and being named MVP of the PCL playoffs. Winter Stats

Carlos Pimentel is starting games for Leones del Escogido. Pimentel threw more innings than any Chihuahuas 2016 hurler and was the PCL Pitcher of the Year with Iowa in 2015. Winter Stats

Bryan Rodriguez is also on the Gigantes del Cibao pitching staff. Rodriguez was one of the most dependable El Paso starters in 2016, and threw in both the Conference Finals versus Tacoma and in the Championship Series versus Oklahoma City. Winter Stats

Matt Wisler has joined the Tigres del Licey pitching staff after his second season in the majors with the Atlanta Braves. Wisler started 22 games in 2014 for the inaugural Chihuahuas. Winter Stats
