EASTLAKE, OH - Greg Soto continued to show why he's one of the best pitchers in the Midwest League as the West Michigan Whitecaps beat the Lake County Captains 6-2 in front of 4,475 fans Saturday night at Classic Park.
Soto, a native of the Dominican Republic, struck out a career-high 12 batters in the victory while allowing just a run. Combined with reliever Jason Foley, the Whitecaps struck out 16 Captains on the night, setting a new season-high. As a team, the Whitecaps have allowed just two runs in their last two games.
The Whitecaps took an early lead on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Danny Pinero and Drew Longley to take a 2-0 advantage. With the score 2-1 in the fifth inning, the 'Caps scored two more in a frame highlighted by Danny Woodrow's run-scoring single to extend the lead to 4-1. Woodrow reached base four times in the ballgame. In the seventh, West Michigan plated another pair of runs featuring Blaise Salter's RBI-single to take a 6-1 lead. Meanwhile, Soto was cruising through seven innings of dominant work, allowing just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out 12. The left-hander shattered his previous career-high in strikeouts (8) and the Whitecaps 2017 team record - formerly set by Austin Sodders (10).

Soto (4-0) earned his fourth victory of the year, while Captains pitcher Aaron CIvale (2-3) allowed five runs in 6.1 innings in taking his third loss of the season. The Whitecaps improve to 28-14, while the Captains fall to 16-25. Catcher Drew Longley led the Whitecaps offense by going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, a double and an RBI in the victory.
