Thunder Take Series Opener Over SeaWolves

The SeaWolves three-game winning streak was snapped by the Trenton Thunder, 4-2, on Friday night at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Erie took the lead in the top of the first inning against Aroldis Chapman, who was on a Major League rehab assignment from the Yankees. Ross Kivett led off the game and drew a four-pitch walk. Kivett stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a second wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
Trenton went ahead in the last of the second against Erie starter Myles Jaye. Mike Ford led off the inning with a solo home run off the scoreboard in right-center, tying the game at 1-1. Billy McKinney followed with a walk. McKinney advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw from Jaye and he scored on a two-out, squeeze bunt from Abiatal Avelino for a 2-1 lead.
The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the sixth against reliever Jose Mesa Jr., Jr. Harold Castro led off with a single, extending his hitting streak to a season-high nine straight games. Castro stole second and scored on a two-out, Christin Stewart double down the right field line.
The Thunder regained the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Jaye walked Ford, gave up a single to McKinney and walked Zack Zehner to load the bases before exiting in favor of Zac Reininger. Jorge Saez and Avelino each brought home runs on sacrifice flies to give Trenton a 4-2 lead.
Thunder reliever Matt Marsh (2-2) earned the win tossing two scoreless frames, allowing one hit while striking out five. Trenton pitchers combined to strike out 14 in the game.
Jaye (1-6) took the loss allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.
Nick Rumbelow earned his first saving going 1-2-3 in the ninth.
The SeaWolves and Thunder meet in doubleheader action on Saturday beginning at 5:30 p.m. at ARM & HAMMER Park. Lefty Tyler Alexander (3-4, 5.01 ERA) takes the mound for Erie in game one against LHP Josh Rogers (3-0, 3.60 ERA).
