LOWELL, MA -- After the Lake Monsters beat the Spinners 6-5 in the completion of Monday's suspended game, Lowell scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 2-2 tie and beat Vermont 4-2 in a seven-inning New York-Penn League contest and split the two-game series Tuesday night at LeLecheur Park.

After allowing a walk and hitting a batter with one out in bottom of sixth, Vermont reliever Abdiel Mendoza got Victor Acosta to ground into a forceout at second base for the second out, but second baseman Jesus Lopez's throw to first was wild allowing Stanley Espinal to score from third base with go ahead run, Yoan Aybar plated an insurance run as he followed with an RBI triple, just the second hit of the game for Lowell.
The Spinners had taken a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homer from Juan Barriento off Vermont starter Jhenderson Hurtado, who allowed just the one hit with one walk and four strikeouts over four innings. The Lake Monsters tied the game in the third as Anthony Churlin doubled and scored on a Jeramiah McCray sacrifice fly before Christopher Quintin scored on a wild pitch.
McCray had two of the three Vermont hits in the contest, while Mendoza (0-1) allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and one strikeout in two innings of relief for the loss. Spinners reliever Devon Fisher (1-0) gave up just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings to earn the win.
Vermont heads to historic Centennial Field to open its 2017 home season with a three-game series against the Brooklyn Cyclones, beginning on Wednesday at 7:05 pm. All fans will receive a free 2017 Lake Monsters magnetic schedule.
