"What goes around, comes around" is now a phrase the Boise Hawks can use to describe their early 2017 season.
After losing on a walk-off single in the rubber match against Spokane last night, the Hawks rallied back to earn a walk-off win tonight with a score of 7-6 against the Eugene Emeralds in the opener of a three-game series.
It was a back-and-forth affair nearly all game as five lead changes in the game kept the sold out crowd at Memorial Stadium on the edge of their seats. For Boise, their night was originally saved by Conner Hale who attempted to steal 3rd base with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning. The throw from Eugene catcher Gustavo Polanco was thrown over the head of third baseman Jhonny Bethencourt into left field. Hale rushed home and scored the tying run to make the game 6-6.
Boise reliever Juan Pena pitched a perfect top of the 10th inning to give the Hawks a chance to win in the 10th inning. That's where the Hawks began to work the magic of the night. Ryan Metzler and Sam Tidaback began the inning with back-to-back bunt singles and then Jose Rodriguez push them 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt.
Then, with two outs in the inning, Avery Romero came to the plate. Romero had just missed hitting a homerun in the 9th inning but settled for a double. With the bases loaded featuring Metzler, Tidaback, and Steven Linkous who was intentionally walked, Romero popped a blooper into shallow right field.
The diving efforts of right fielder Kwang-Min Kwon were not enough and next thing the Boise crowd knew, Romero was being pounded by water and gatorade jugs in center field. The Hawks take the win on Tuesday and improve their record back to .500 at 3-3. Eugene drops to 2-4. Earning the win was Pena, while taking the loss was Michael Knighton, who gave up the game winning hit.
The Hawks return to Memorial Stadium tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m. MT for game two against Eugene. Left-hander John Valek is expected to pitch for Boise.
