NORWICH, CT - Five pitchers combined on a 3-hit, 13-strikeout shutout as the Connecticut Tigers opened the 2017 season with a 9-0 win over Tri-City at Dodd Stadium Tuesday.
Matt Manning, Detroit's top minor league prospect, dominated in his 4 2/3 innings of work, striking out 9, including the first 8 Tri-City outs. Victor Mueses, Daniel Gonzalez, Clate Schmidt, and Brandyn Sittinger finished up with 4 1/3 hitless innings.
Offensively, The Tigers benefited from nine Tri-City walks and solo home runs from Randel Alcantara and Hector Martinez.
The Tigers (1-0), welcome the Baltimore Orioles' NY-Penn league affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds, to Dodd Stadium to open a three-game set Wednesday night at 7:05. All games can be heard on 1310 WICH and online at www.cttigers.com
