Stockton, CA. - After taking the lead in the ninth inning, the Modesto Nuts coughed up their third advantage in a 13-12 walk-off loss to the Stockton Ports on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark.
After scoring three runs in the top of the ninth to take a one-run lead, the Nuts (56-44; 17-13) were one strike away from a win in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on first, catcher Arturo Nieto tried to throw behind the runner. Nieto's throw sailed down the line allowing Barrera to reach third. Jordan Cowan's throw to third on the play got away from Kevin Santa and that allowed the tying run to score.
With the game locked at 12 going into the tenth, Jack Anderson (L, 0-1) walked the leadoff man before he was sacrificed to second. Eli White followed and won the game for the Ports (48-52; 12-18) when he delivered a walk-off RBI single to split this four-game series.
Kyle Lewis homered twice. He launched a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Nuts their first of three leads. He also smacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Eric Filia gave the Nuts their second lead in the fourth on a two-run double. He also gave the Nuts the lead in the top of the ninth on a sac fly into left. A bases loaded walk to Kevin Santa, who had two RBI, had tied the game in the ninth. Joe DeCarlo drove in two runs including a ninth-inning double.
Reggie McClain started the game for the Nuts and was hit for eight runs on two homers and seven hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk in five-plus innings.
The Ports took the lead back from the Nuts in the sixth when they scored seven runs. The biggest blow in that inning came on a Mikey White grand slam.
