SEVIERVILLE, TENNESSEE - Strong pitching combined with timely hitting allowed the Smokies to take game four with the Lookouts 6-4 on Saturday night in front of a strong crowd of 7,270 on UT Night at Smokies Stadium.
Zach Hedges got the ball for Tennessee and was extremely successful right from the start, as he gave up just two hits through his first four innings of work. The California native's only run came off of a solo home run by T.J. White in the fifth, but that would be all the Lookouts could get off the starting pitcher. Hedges would finish the night with four hits given up and two strikeouts over seven innings of action.
Andrew Ely would get the scoring started for the Smokies with a solo homer in the second inning off of Lookouts' starter Fernando Romero. Sacrifice flies by Yasiel Balaguert in the third and Charcer Burks in the fourth would push the Smokies' lead to three.
Tennessee would get the other half of their runs in the fifth. A bases loaded groundout by Cael Brockmeyer would drive in the first run of the inning with a bases loaded groundout. The other two runs would come with Andrew Ely at the dish, off of a wild pitch by Romero and a RBI single that would bring Romero's night to an end, and push the Smokies' lead to five.
Preston Morrison would replace Hedges in the eighth, giving up three runs in his two innings of work. That would be all the Lookouts could muster, as Tennessee stopped their four-game skid with the 6-4 win over Chattanooga.
The Smokies are back in action tomorrow evening to close out the series with the Lookouts. Adbert Alzolay is expected to be on the bump for Tennessee, while Lewis Thorpe is expected to take the mound for Chattanooga. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m. ET, part of another U.S. Cellular Family Funday at Smokies Stadium.
