FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 25, 2017) - The Fort Myers Miracle (39-21) blasted a season-high four home runs in their 14-2 series-opening win against the Charlotte Stone Crabs (35-25), reducing their magic number to six. Jaylin Davis supplied a pair of home runs, Tanner English plated four with one grand swing, and Brent Rooker towered his tenth of the year in 36 games.
The first inning set the tone for the Miracle, as they brought in six runs in the blink of an eye. Starter LHP Brock Burke (L, 4-6) allowed the runs beginning with a bases loaded two-run double by Zander Wiel. Jermaine Palacios drove in Rooker with a groundout, and English singled home Wiel. With one out, Davis propelled the first of his two home runs to right field, a no doubt opposite field shot.
In the fourth, eight men reached consecutively to put up another six-spot. RBI-singles by Wiel and Palacios were followed by English's grand slam, Fort Myers' third slam of the year. Davis added his second blast in the sixth, and Rooker's mammoth swat came in the seventh to left field.
The Miracle pitchers kept the Stone Crabs in check. RHP Brady Anderson tossed three scoreless frames in a start, but exited the game with an apparent injury. LHP Tyler Jay (W, 1-0) picked up the win in his 2017 FSL debut with two scoreless relief innings. RHP Tom Hackimer provided a pair of zeros, and RHP Michael Kohn ended it in the ninth. LHP Sam Clay saw his 32.2 scoreless inning streak come to an end when Angel Moreno singled in Lucius Fox in the eighth inning.
The win is Fort Myers' 45th of the year at Hammond Stadium, tying a franchise record. It is also their 12th consecutive win at home.
The Miracle look for an early series win in Game Two against Charlotte with LHP Lewis Thorpe on the hill. RHP Brandon Lawson goes for the Stone Crabs with first pitch at 6:05 PM ET.
