TAMPA, FL -Tony Santillan twirled another gem in Daytona's 8-2 win over the Tampa Tarpons Tuesday night at Steinbrenner Field. The right-hander pushed his season-best streak to 16 innings without allowing an earned run.
After failing to score in the first, the Tortugas scored in the each of the next three innings. In the top of the second, Brantley Bell drove in Bruce Yari with a double to right field for the game's first run.
In the top of the third, Daytona doubled their lead. After RHP Adonis Rosa retired the first two Tortuga hitters, Tyler Stephenson reached on a two-out single and came in to score on a Mitch Nay double to left.
The Tortugas would send ten hitters to the plate in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Bell started the one-out rally with his second double of the game. After Carlos Rivero reached on a Rosa error, TJ Friedl and Dilson Herrera hit back-to-back RBI singles to increase the Daytona lead to 4-0. Daytona scored their fifth run on a Mitch Nay infield single to the shortstop, and their sixth when Yari drew a walk with the bases loaded.
Tampa would finally crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. With RHP Ryan Hendrix on, in relief of Santillan, Estevan Florial led the inning off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. He would then come in to score the Tarpons first run on an Isiah Gilliam RBI groundout.
However, the Tortugas would get the run back a half inning later. Friedl led off the inning with a four-pitch walk, before stealing second base. He would come in to score on a Trammell triple to center field to run Daytona's lead to 7-1.
The lead grew to 8-1 in the top of the ninth. Bell reached on a two-out triple and came in to score on Carlos Rivero's first hit of 2018, a double over the first base bag.
Tampa rounded out the scoring in the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to left field from Brandon Wagner off of RHP Nick Howard.
RHP Tony Santillan (2-0) won his second straight decision, tossing six shutout innings, while allowing four hits and striking out six.
RHP Adonis Rosa (1-1) went 3 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (three earned), walking three and struck out four.
LHP Scott Moss (1-0, 5.63) will get the ball for Daytona in the middle game of this three game series Wednesday. He will be opposed by RHP Trevor Stephan (0-0, 1.80).
First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 6:30 PM, with coverage beginning at 6:15 PM with The Metcare Pregame Show on AM 1230, AM 1490, and FM 106.9 WSBB.
