Chiefs avoid sweep, win 4-2 Thursday in Rochester

Rochester, NY (May 17, 2018) - The Syracuse Chiefs won the final game of a three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings, 4-2, on Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. Hunter Jones had three hits, two runs scored, and an RBI in the game. Meanwhile, Chiefs starting pitcher Phillips Valdez came up huge, throwing five scoreless innings in a spot start while allowing just two hits in his first start since August 25, 2017.

Syracuse (19-18) got on the board in the top of the first inning. With one out, Yadiel Hernandez worked a walk. Matt Hague followed with a double to center field that scored Hernandez for a 1-0 Syracuse lead.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the top of the seventh. With one out, Bengie González singled. Hunter Jones then doubled to right field, allowing Gonzalez to score to give Syracuse a 2-0 advantage. Rafael Bautista followed with a single that scored Jones for a 3-0 edge.

Rochester (18-16) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jermaine Curtis singled and Brock Stassi doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Willians Astudillo followed with a double that scored both Curtis and Stassi to cut the Chiefs lead to one, 3-2.

Syracuse added one more run in the ninth. With one out, Jones and Adrían Sanchez both singled, putting runners on first and second. Hernandez then singled home Jones for a 4-2 Syracuse lead.

The Chiefs begin a three-game series against the I.L. North-Division-leading Leigh Valley IronPigs on Friday night. RHP Erick Fedde will pitch for Syracuse, and RHP Ben Lively will be on the mound for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
