VISALIA, CA - The San Jose Giants were held to three hits on Tuesday evening in a 7-0 loss to the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park. Four Visalia pitchers combined on the shutout while Ramon Hernandez and Drew Ellis each blasted two-run home runs to lead the Rawhide offensive attack. After back-to-back wins on Friday and Saturday, the Giants (39-44 overall, 5-8 second half) suffered losses the next three nights as Visalia rallied to claim the series victory.
Jalen Miller (2-for-4, 2B) knocked out a pair of hits to lead San Jose offensively in defeat.
Rawhide starter Matt Peacock (2-0) earned the win after tossing five shutout innings of one-hit ball. Peacock walked two and struck out five during his dominant stint on the mound. Austin Mason (2 IP), Robby Sexton (1 IP) and Miguel Aguilar (1 IP) then combined on four scoreless innings of relief to complete the shutout.
Visalia struck early on Tuesday plating three runs in the bottom of the second against Giants starter Raffi Vizcaino to take a 3-0 lead. Renae Martinez started the rally with a one-out single before Ramon Hernandez was hit by a pitch with two outs. Adam Walton was up next and he lined a single into center to bring home Martinez with the first run of the contest. Following a walk to Luis Alejandro Basabe that loaded the bases, Mark Karaviotis grounded a single through the hole on the left side to score both Hernandez and Walton for a 3-0 Rawhide advantage.
Visalia stretched their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Jason Morozowski led off with an infield single to third before Hernandez belted a two-run home run to deep left center. The homer was Hernandez's team-leading 12th of the season.
The Rawhide then capped the scoring for the night in the bottom of the eighth while Ellis connected for a two-run home run off of reliever Frank Rubio to make it 7-0.
Meanwhile, San Jose's only hit off of Peacock was a two-out single off the left field wall from Wander Franco in the top of the first. The Giants didn't manage another hit until Miller reached on a one-out double in the top of the sixth when the right fielder Hernandez lost the ball in the lights. Miller's eighth-inning single was San Jose's third and final hit of the game.
Vizcaino (5-5) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) over 4 2/3 innings. The right-hander gave up six hits, walked four and struck out six.
