Syracuse, NY (July 22, 2018) - The Syracuse SkyChiefs lost on Sunday afternoon to the Louisville Bats, 3-1, at NBT Bank Stadium. Josh VanMeter broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run home run to give the Bats the series sweep. Phillips Valdez was strong for the Chiefs, throwing a quality start, allowing just the three runs in seven and one-third innings Sunday.

Syracuse (40-59) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Reynolds led off with a double. Irving Falu then singled to put runners at first and third base. José Marmolejos followed with a groundout into a double play, but Reynolds scored on the play to give the SkyChiefs a 1-0 lead.

Louisville (41-55) tied the game in the top of the fourth. C.J. McElroy began the frame with a triple. Gabriel Guerrero then grounded out to third base, but McElroy scored from third to knot the game up, 1-1.

The Bats took the lead in the fifth. Chadwick Tromp was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With Hernan Iribarren batting, Tromp stole second base and moved to third base on a throwing error on the play. Iribarren grounded out to second for the first out of the inning, but VanMeter followed with a two-run home run to right-center field that put Louisville in front, 3-1.

Syracuse has an off day on Monday before beginning a six-day road trip. The Chiefs play a doubleheader against the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday night. LHP Tommy Milone will start the first game of the doubleheader for Syracuse with RHP Carlos Torres scheduled to pitch the second game. First pitch for the first game is 5:05 p.m. with the second game to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first at Harbor Park.
