METAIRIE, LA - Iowa and New Orleans were held to a combined eight hits as the Baby Cakes (55-60) snuck a 1-0 win over the I-Cubs (42-73), Thursday at Shrine on Airline.

Marlins No. 2 prospect Sandy Alcantara (W, 6-3) stymied the I-Cubs at the plate. After a pair of first inning walks, Alcantara sat down the I-Cubs in order until a Jason Vosler single with two outs in the fourth. He allowed just the trio of base runners through 6.0 frames while striking out six.
Luke Farrell (L, 0-4) was nearly as effective as he scattered five hits and three walks through 5.0 frames. New Orleans scored the sole run of the ballgame off Farrell in the second. Tomás Telis doubled and moved up a bag on a fly out, before speeding home on a passed ball.
Dakota Mekkes relieved Farrell in the sixth and got into trouble as he gave up a double and walked a batter. The 6-7 righty shut down the effort with an inning-ending strikeout to leave both runners stranded.
The balance of Iowa's relief effort was flawless as Alberto Baldonado contributed 1.2 innings and Dillon Maples got the final out of the game, while recording two strikeouts after a dropped third strike.
Ryan Court gave Iowa a chance in the ninth inning with a leadoff single, and a Taylor Davis base-knock put runners at the corners with one out. The comeback fell short as the I-Cubs' offense couldn't support the night's pitching power. Iowa closed the game with just three hits - two in the ninth - and five walks.
Iowa and New Orleans go head-to-head tomorrow at Shrine on Airline for a 7 p.m. CT first pitch. Catch the action on AM 940 or www.iowacubs.com.
