Funnville - Dylan Davis launched a solo home run and Dillon McNamara earned his sixth save of the season as the Flying Squirrels (55-61) declawed the Fisher Cats (67-48) 5-2 on Saturday at The Diamond. Reliver Sam Wolff picked up the win for Richmond - his first as a Squirrel - by tossing two scoreless innings. Richmond out-hit the powerful New Hampshire offense 9-6 to even the series at one game apiece. The Squirrels roared back from a 1-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and another in the eighth. Davis crunched his 12th home run of the year with two outs in the seventh.
Richmond was shutout over the first five innings by NH LHP Tayler Saucedo before breaking through to take the lead 2-1 in the sixth. Saucedo walked Dylan Davis with one out in the inning. An error on the shortstop Bo Bichette was followed by an RBI single form John Polonius, tying the game, 1-1. John Riley followed Polonius with another base hit into right field for a 2-1 advantage. The Riley base hit ended the outing for Saucedo who suffered the defeat. Saucedo (3-2) worked 5.2 innings and allowed the two runs on four hits. The lefty walked four and struck out two.
Richmond created a small cushion with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Facing reliver Andrew Case, CJ Hinojosa launched a double to the base of the fence in left centerfield and Luigi Rodriguez followed with a double of his own. Davis with two outs launched the home run for a 4-1 contest.
Right-hander Logan Webb made the start for the Squirrels and retired the first six batters he faced in his Diamond debut. Santiago Espinal disrupted Webb with a double to start the third. Webb also issued a walk in the inning, but stranded runners on the corners to keep the game scoreless. Webb tossed 39 pitches over the first three innings of his outing.
The Fisher Cats pushed across the first run of the game on the top of the fourth inning. Harold Ramirez singled to begin the inning and motored to third base on a base hit into right field from Cavan Biggio. With runners on the corners, Max Pentecost grounded out to short, producing Ramirez from third for a 1-0 lead.
Webb lasted five innings and even returned to start the sixth - marking his longest start of the season. Webb walked the first batter in Forest Wall to begin the sixth, leading to Sam Wolff's relief appearance. Wolff struck out the side with a walk mixed in, keeping the game a 1-0 contest. Wolff's K's closed Webb's line as he allowed the one run on three hits. He walked three and did not strikeout a batter while using a season-high 85 pitches.
Wolff (1-1) earned the win with two scoreless innings of work. Dusten Knight tossed 1.1 innings before McNamara entered with a runner on and one out in the ninth. McNamara induced a pop fly and picked up strikeout to ern the save.
The Flying Squirrels conclude their six-game homestand on Sunday afternoon with game three of three against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays). Flying Squirrels RHP Mike Connolly3-4, 5.50) will work the finale against New Hampshire RHP Jon Harris (10-4, 4.76). Sunday in Funnville features a special appearance form Peppa Pig.
