(Burlington, IA) - The Burlington Bees (20-32) were shutout by the Cedar Rapids Kernels (32-23), 3-0 in game one of the series, on Friday night at Community Field.

The Bees looked like they would take the lead early. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Derek Jenkins singled to right and then stole second base. Jordan Zimmerman reached on an infield single but Jenkins was thrown out at the plate trying to score, keeping the game scoreless.
Cedar Rapids took the lead in the third inning. Aaron Whitefield started the inning with a walk. With runners at the corners, Ariel Montesino hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Whitefield, giving the Kernels a 1-0 lead. Cedar Rapids added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to a Whitefield single and a Travis Blankenhorn sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Bees loaded the bases in the seventh inning but a double play ended their threat as the Bees fell 3-0 in the series opener. Domenick Carlini (3-3) earned the win while Nate Bertness (2-4) was charged with the loss and Hector Lujan (3) picked up the save. The Bees and the Kernels continue the series on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. Andrew Vinson makes the start for the Bees against Clark Beeker for Cedar Rapids. The first firework show of the 2017 season will follow the game. For tickets, visit gobees.com or stop by the Bees' office. For more information, call the Bees at (319)-754-5705.
