North Little Rock, AR-Lindsey Caughel pitched six scoreless innings for the second consecutive start and the Arkansas Travelers pitched their second shutout in the past three days, beating the Corpus Christi Hooks, 4-0 on Monday night. It is the sixth shutout of the season for the Travs pitching staff.
Caughel (5-7) earned his second straight win allowing only four hits and a walk over six innings with seven strikeouts. He worked around back-to-back hits to open the game by striking out J.D. Davis and Jon Singleton and getting out of the frame with no damage. The Hooks never seriously threatened again against Caughel. Tyler Knigge then pitched two scoreless innings and Blake Perry tossed the final frame to close down the win.
Arkansas also shutout San Antonio on Saturday night and have pitched five shutouts since June 14th and four since June 21st.
The offense banged out 11 hits on the night including a couple clutch hits to drive in runs. Dario Pizzano opened the scoring in the third inning with a two out, two run single up the middle scoring Ian Miller and Chuck Taylor. Joey Wong added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it a three run game. Then in the fifth, Kyle Waldrop roped a run scoring double with two out for what would be the final tally of the game.
All the runs came against Corpus Christi starter Cy Sneed who dropped to 7-5. Ryan Casteel led the Travs with a three hit game including a double while Chuck Taylor and Kyle Waldrop had two knocks apiece and doubles of their own.
The Travelers look for a fourth straight win and a sweep of the Hooks as they celebrate Independence Day on Tuesday night. Right-hander Justin DeFratus (2-4, 6.18) goes to the mound opposed by lefty Framber Valdez (0-1, 3.00). First pitch is set for 5:30 and fans are invited to stay after the game to watch the Downtown Fireworks. The game will also be broadcast on the Sports Animal 920, the First Pitch App, TuneIn radio and milb.tv.
