Peoria, IL (May 14, 2018) - In a game that featured five home runs, the Clinton LumberKings failed to keep pace with the Peoria Chiefs in a 5-2 loss on Monday night at Dozer Park. Major Leaguer Alex Reyes made a rehab start for the Chiefs (18-16) and held the LumberKings (18-14) scoreless over his five innings of work.
Reyes (1-0) looked every bit of the front-line starter the Cardinals envision him as. Over his five-shutout innings of work he struck out 12, most by an opposing pitcher this season, and held Clinton to just one hit during his time out.
The Chiefs opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning against Clinton starter Ray Kerr. Julio Rodriguez launched the first of his two home runs to put Peoria out in front. Rodriguez ended the night going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double.
Kerr (1-3), again, ran into trouble in the third inning. The lefty walked three batters to load the bases and was removed from the game following a, two out, two-run single by Elehuris Montero to center.
Peoria's scoring ended in the bottom of the fifth with their third home run of the night. Yariel Gonzalez launched a solo home run to right off LumberKings reliever Clay Chandler to give the Chiefs a 5-0 lead.
Clinton's bats awoke in the sixth inning following Reyes departure. Dimas Ojeda lined his fourth home run of the year over the wall in right off of Chiefs reliever Johan Oviedo.
Louis Boyd added the LumberKings second home run of the night in the top of the eighth. The long fly was his second of the season and pulled Clinton to within three.
The comeback would go no further as the LumberKings would be set down 1-2-3 in the ninth all by way of the strikeout by Oviedo who picked up his first save of the season.
The LumberKings will continue their four-game series with the Peoria Chiefs with game two on Tuesday morning. Clinton will throw left-hander Oliver Jaskie (1-2, 5.00) while the Chiefs will counter with righty Evan Guillory (3-2, 3.53). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM. Fans looking to listen to the call of the game can hear Erik Oas at 10:45 AM with the pregame show on 100.3 FM WCCI.
