HELENA, MT - The Helena Brewers (15-18) slugged three home runs en route to a 10-5 victory over the Idaho Falls Chukars (15-18) on Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Legion Field.
With the game scoreless in the third, KJ Harrison and Payton Henry each walked before Jay Feliciano crushed a 421-foot moonshot to left on the first pitch of his at-bat, his fifth home run of the season, giving the Brewers a 3-0 lead. Zach Clark walked to put another man on base and came in to score when Yerald Martinez launched his fourth home run of the season, extending the lead to 5-0. Martinez recorded his first three-hit performance of the season, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Idaho Falls responded in the fourth, cutting the deficit to just one run. The Chukars loaded the bases with a double, a walk and a single, and scored their first run on a sacrifice fly. Attempting to throw out a base runner, Henry committed a throwing error, allowing another run to come in and score. Freddy Fermin then homered the opposite way, his first of the year, to bring the Brewers lead to 5-4.
Starter Nelson Hernandez (5-0) didn't allow another run to score after the third, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two. It's the seventh straight outing that the Venezuelan has hurled at least 5.0 innings this season.
The Brewers offense rewarded their starter with additional run support in the bottom of the fifth. Franly Mallen and Martinez strung together back-to-back singles, followed by a Jose Gomez walk to load the bases. Nick Roscetti struck a 2-0 pitch to straightaway centerfield, bringing in all three runners with a triple, pushing the lead back to four runs at 8-4.
Though the Chukars scored a run in the top of the sixth, Helena used another home run to lengthen their lead in the bottom of the frame. Harrison worked a lead off walk and Henry followed with a two-run opposite field home run, his fifth of the season, giving the Brewers a 10-5 lead. Henry finished the day 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBI, three walks and two runs scored.
Reliever Robbie Hitt earned a hold after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking three. Cody Beckman made his fourth scoreless appearance, pitching 1.0 inning and allowing two hits.
