Indians prospect Sheffield gets probation

Indians 2014 first-round Draft pick Justus Sheffield has pleaded guilty to underage drinking and criminal trespass charges, according to multiple reports. The charges stemmed from an incident last month in his hometown of Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Sheffield, the Indians' seventh-ranked prospect, was arrested on Jan. 12 after allegedly breaking into a residence with two of his former Tullahoma High School teammates. Although he was initially charged with burglary, that count was reduced to criminal trespass. The court also handed down a deferred judgment against Sheffield, who received probation and will have his record cleared if he avoids trouble for the next year.

According to the Associated Press, the 18-year-old also was told to contribute $500 to charity.

The Tullahoma News reported the day after the incident that Sheffield told police he intended to "discuss some issues" with a resident at the home. Sheffield had a "strong odor of intoxicating beverage on his person and admitted to having a few drinks of alcohol," according to police reports.

The left-handed pitching prospect was selected 31st overall in last year's Draft after being tabbed Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. He chose to forgo a scholarship to pitch for Vanderbilt, signing with Cleveland for a $1.6 million bonus. Sheffield debuted in the Rookie-level Arizona League and went 3-1 with a 4.79 ERA in eight games, including four starts.
