Rangers' Gallo named AZL's best

Athletics skipper Jensen named league's top manager
August 29, 2012
Rangers first-round pick Joey Gallo was voted the Arizona League's Most Valuable Player on Wednesday as the Rookie-level circuit revealed its 2012 All-Star team and award winners.

The 39th overall pick in June, Gallo hit .293 in 150 at-bats while setting the all-time Arizona League record with 18 home runs. He knocked in 43 runs in 43 games, stole six bases without being caught and finished with a 1.169 OPS before earning a promotion to Class A Short-Season Spokane.

"I've been happy with what I'm showing power-wise," Gallo told MiLB.com last week. "I couldn't imagine how many home runs I would hit in the AZL and stuff. I definitely didn't come in thinking I would've done that."

Gallo, who has 22 homers combined this season, also drew 37 walks in 43 starts and left Arizona with a .435 on-base percentage.

"I didn't expect to come out and be a star, I wanted to just have fun and try and enjoy my first year," he said. "Let things fall into play, take it day by day."

Marcus Jensen of the Phoenix Athletics was named the Manager of the Year after leading the A's to a league-best 36-17 record.
