Elizabethton, TN - The Burlington Royals (0-1) dropped the opening game of the 2018 season 6-1 to the defending Appalachian League champion Elizabethton Twins (1-0).
The B-Royals struck first in the ball game in the top of the third inning. After Isaiah Henry and Jeison Guzman both walked to lead off the inning, Jose Marquez put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one away. Then, Angel Medina lined a single over second base to bring in Henry and give the Royals a 1-0 advantage.
After putting up zeroes through the first four innings, Charlie Neuweiler allowed two runs in the fifth inning. An RBI double and RBI groundout gave Elizabethton the two tallies and a 2-1 lead.
The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the E-Twins added two more runs on an RBI single and a run-scoring walk. Elizabethton added two more runs in the eighth to make it 6-1.
The Elizabethton pitching staff posted six consecutive scoreless frames to finish the game and take the opener 6-1.
Game two of the series is set for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Joe O'Brien Field in Elizabethton. The home opener is on June 22 against the Bluefield Blue Jays.
The Burlington Royals are the Appalachian League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
