Over the last week former Burlington players have set milestones in the Major Leagues. Carsten Charles (CC) Sabathia who played in Burlington in 1998 has achieved a milestone that few players accomplish. He has joined the elite in becoming the 17th player in history and the 3rd to come out of Appalachian League to strike out 3,000 batters in a career. CC joins Appy League alumni Greg Maddux (1984) and Nolan Ryan (1965). Sabathia played in five games with the Burlington Indians. During his time, he had 35 strikeouts in 18 innings pitched. He has spent his career with three teams, the Cleveland Indians, before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for a half of a season, then signing with the New York Yankees in 2009. He is a six-time All-Star, a 2009 World Series winner, and a 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner. Sabathia this season is 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in four games started.
Another player breaking milestones is Elvis Luciano. Luciano has won his first game in his career, becoming the first 21st century born player to do so. After the win he was showered in baby powder and milk reminding him of his youth. This season, Luciano has come out of the bullpen in nine games and has an ERA of 3.55, in those nine games he has had nine strikeouts in 12 innings for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Congratulations to CC Sabathia and Elvis Luciano!
