KINGSPORT, TN - The Burlington Royals (22-41) defeated the Kingsport Mets (32-31) by a score of 5-1 in the series opener Friday night.
Burlington starter Elvis Luciano allowed a run in the first, but held the Kingsport offense scoreless over the rest of his seven innings of work, earning himself the win.
The Royals got their first run of the night in third, on an RBI single from Eric Cole, tying the game at 1-1. In the fourth, Chris Hudgins and Colby Schultz had RBIs to give the B-Royals a 3-1 lead.
In the seventh, Jose Marquez scored on a wild pitch and Cole followed with his second RBI of the night to push the lead to 5-1.
Kyle Hinton pitched the final two innings to secure the victory. The second game of the series will be Saturday night in Kingsport. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Burlington Royals are the Appalachian League affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.
