Elvis Luciano, the first 2000 baby to play in the MLB. The 19-year-old spent last season here in Burlington, arriving after being traded from the Diamondbacks for Jon Jay. In Burlington, he had a 3-5 record with a 4.66 ERA. Following the 2018 season, Luciano was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays in the Rule 5 draft in December. The Rule 5 draft allows teams to pick players from other teams that aren't on the forty-man roster, the protective roster. Because he was traded from his original team, he was able to be picked. Normally, a team has security of a player for five seasons before they are eligible for the Rule 5 draft. Once selected in Rule 5, the player most remain on the Major League roster or be sent back to the team they were on prior. Therefore, he will go from advanced-rookie ball, among the beginning ranks of minor league baseball tiers, to the majors, skipping over single-A, double-A and Triple-A.
Luciano has pitched in one game so far this season for the Blue Jays. That game resulted in him striking out a batter in 1 1/3 innings pitched. He did give up a hit and a walk in that span as well, but did not allow a run. Dan Szymborski's projection models, ZiPS, shows season projection and is regarded as one of the most accurate predictors in baseball. ZiPS show Luciano as a 2-4 record pitcher with a 5.20 ERA along with 9 games started. Though this may not be exact or close, it gives us an insight at what his stats will potentially look like.
