Elizabethton, TN - The Elizabethton Twins (3-0) completed a three-game sweep of the Burlington Royals (0-3) to open the season with a 9-5 win on Thursday night.
For the third straight night, the B-Royals scored the first run of the game. This time, it was on a Juan Carlos Negret solo home run in the top of the second inning. Negret's blast was the first of 2018 for the Royals.
Elizabethton took the lead in the third by scoring three runs off Burlington starter Randy Acevedo. The Royals got a run back in the top of the fifth when Colby Schultz grounded out to bring in Chris Hudgins who had doubled. However, the E-Twins answered back with a run in the bottom of the same inning.
Burlington showed fight in the seventh scoring two runs to tie the game. The first came in on a Dalton Griffin RBI triple, and the second was on a wild pitch that brought Griffin home to tie the game at four.
In the bottom of the seventh, the E-Twins scored three runs to take a 7-4 advantage. Burlington did get a run back in the top of the eight on a Jose Marquez RBI single, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
After being swept to open the season, the B-Royals will open the home portion of the Appalachian League schedule on Friday at 7:00 p.m. against the Bluefield Blue Jays. 2018 first-round pick Daniel Lynch will be on the mound for the Royals, making his professional debut.
