Indians Win 6-1
The Burlington Indians (1-1) used a four run, third inning to win 6-1 over the Princeton Devil Rays (1-1) Wednesday night in Princeton, West Virginia.
Indians right fielder Alfred Ard started the third inning with a leadoff double down the right field line. Cristo Arnal followed with a line drive-RBI single to right field to score Ard .
With one out, Evandy DeLeon singled to put two runners on base. Niuman Romero then slapped a RBI-single to left to score Arnal and push the lead to 2-0.
Indians third baseman Nick Petrucci brought in the final two runs in the third by sending a deep fly ball off the centerfield wall for a two out, two-RBI double.
The Indians took the 4-0 lead to the top of the sixth before tacking on another run. First baseman PJ Hiser led of the inning with a walk before stealing second base and advancing to third on a wild pitch. With Petrucci at first after a walk, Indians DH Jose Chavez hit a sacrifice fly to deep left-centerfield to score Hiser and bump the lead to 5-0.
The Devil Rays answered the run in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Bethel singled with two outs and D-Rays shortstop Matt Devins doubled down the left field line to score Bethel.
The Indians added the final run in the eight. Three consecutive walks to lead of the inning loaded the bases before DeLeon scored his second run of the night on a wild pitch.
Once again the Indians pitching staff only allowed one earned run. Indians starter Carlton Smith worked two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and struck out one. Jorge Riera (1-0) picked up his first with of the season with four strong innings of relief. Riera allowed four hits, one run, one walk and struck out two.
Edgar Morffe followed and threw two scoreless innings while striking out three, and Jesus Soto tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Indians LHP Doodle Hicks is scheduled to start the final game of the three game series Thursday night. Game time is 7PM.
