PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. (May 24, 2018) - Brendan McKay turned in six scoreless innings Thursday night, pitching the Charlotte Stone Crabs to a 1-0 win over the Fort Myers Miracle at Charlotte Sports Park.
McKay (2-0) allowed just three hits while striking out five and not walking a batter, retiring the final six batters he saw.
Yonny Chirinos went two scoreless in a rehab outing before Brandon Koch worked a scoreless ninth to earn his third save.
The Stone Crabs (22-23) scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Nathaniel Lowe led off the inning with a double to the right field corner. After Peter Maris advanced him to third on a groundout, Rene Pinto grounded a ball to Fort Myers (18-27) third baseman Joe Cronin. Cronin's throw bounced past the first baseman and into the seats, allowing Lowe to score and give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.
Miracle starter Andro Cutura (2-1) allowed just one unearned run on three hits over seven quality innings. He struck out five and walked two.
Thursday's shutout is just the second of the season for the Stone Crabs, and only their second win when scoring less than four runs.
The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Coverage begins at 3:45 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
