Jupiter had the tying run just 90 feet away with one out in the ninth inning but could not capitalize in a 4-3 loss to Daytona.
The bottom of the ninth inning started with two singles and a fielder's choice bunt attempt that saw the lead runner get forced out at third base. Chris Hoo was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one away in the inning.
As a team, Jupiter was just 1-10 with runners in scoring position.
The Hammerheads (28-16) showed grit late, taking advantage of poor fielding from Daytona (26-18). An errant throw with two outs brought home Anfernee Seymour. With Brian Miller on second following the throw into the dugout, Joe Dunand hit his sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot, and cut Jupiter's deficit to just one run.
Dunand finished the game with a game high three hits. Riley Mahan was the only other Hammerheads hitter to record a multi-hit game.
Out of the bullpen, Ryan McKay (2 IP), Parker Bugg (2 IP) and Reilly Hovis (1 IP) combined for five scoreless innings and six strikeouts.
Daytona scored a solo run in the first and three more in the fourth on a three-run home run from Brantley Bell.
The teams will play the rubber match of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 PM from Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
