Cardinals Hold Off Mets, Win 7-6

June 12, 2012
After dropping two games in the later innings, the Palm Beach Cardinals (29-34) made sure they would not let another slip away, as Scott Schneider held off the St. Lucie Mets (48-16) to a 7-6 victory.

The Cardinals fell behind early, as the Mets came out swinging in the bottom of the first. Alonzo Harris hit a leadoff triple and came around on a single Wilfredo Tovar to put the Mets up 1-0.

In the top of the third, the Cardinals answered with an RBI double by Starlin Rodriguez, which brought in Ronny Gil to knot it up at 1-1. However, their lead was short lived, as Mets answered in the bottom of the frame. Tovar got on with a one out walk, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Flores to make it 2-1.

Starter Anthony Ferrara Jr. (4-4) would shut it down after that, tossing seven innings of two run ball, striking out four and walking five.

He received a big lift in the sixth and seventh innings, as the Cardinals scored three runs in each inning to pull out to a 7-2 lead. Chris Edmondson turned the game around in the sixth with a three-run shot over the right field fence to give the Beach Birds a 4-2 lead. In the next frame, Edmondson was at it again, connecting for a two-run double to cap the scoring for the Cardinals.

With a comfortable lead, and reliable Iden Nazario on the hill, the Cardinals looked to coast to an easy victory. However, the Mets had other ideas, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut it to 7-5. Nazario, could not find the plate, as he walked three and gave up and RBI triple and RBI double.

Nazario was lifted for Schneider, who promptly got an inning ending ground out, but Ildemaro Vargas booted the groundball to load the bases. Facing a tough Robbie Shields, Schneider induced the inning-ending fly out.

In the ninth, the Mets threatened again as they scored one and had the potential tying run in scoring position with their three and four hole hitters, but Schneider was to tough on this night, collecting his first save of the season.

Ferrara Jr. collected his fourth win, while Edmonson finished the night 2-for-4 with a season-high five RBI.

The Cardinals resume their series with the St. Lucie Mets tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. Bradley Watson (0-1) is scheduled to make the start.
