Cardinals Hit Four Doubles in Game
Jupiter, FL - Blake Drake hit two doubles and drove in two runs to lead the Palm Beach Cardinals (15-13) to a 4-2 victory over the Lakeland Flying Tigers (14-15). Ryan Helsley improved to 2-1 on the season and Landon Beck recorded his league leading 7th save of the season.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in the second inning as they tacked on three runs to get them out front 3-0. Chris Chinea and Casey Turgeon started the frame with back-to-back doubles and advanced on a perfect sacrifice bunt off the bat of Edmundo Sosa. Jeremy Martinez grounded out, scoring Chinea for the first run of the game. Darren Seferina took a single to left-center to score Turgeon. Blake Drake came up and hit a double to right field to score Seferina and got thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple.
Ryan Helsley settled in tossing 5.2 innings of one run baseball, giving up six hits, the first coming in the fourth inning. Two of the six hits were to MLB Rehab player, J.D. Martinez. Helsley also struck out four and walked one as well. The only run that was scored on Helsley came in the sixth as Ross Kivett and J.D. Martinez started the inning with a pair of singles. Kivett later scored on a ground out off the bat of Ben Verlander. Brennan Leitao finished the sixth inning for Helsley.
Palm Beach put another run on the board with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, putting the game at 4-1 and too far out of reach for the Tigers. Martinez and Seferina both hit singles with two outs in the inning, giving Drake another chance at the plate. Drake took a ball to left that got him to second on the double and scored Martinez, Seferina was thrown out at home trying to score on the play.
Leitao gave up a home run in the top of the eighth to Kivett on an 0-2 pitch, making it a two run game. Leitao gave over to Ian McKinney who got the second out of the eight. Landon Beck followed McKinney and got the four out save to secure the 4-2 win at Roger Dean Stadium.
The Cardinals and Flying Tigers will play again tomorrow night starting at 5:30 EST. Connor Jones gets the start for the Cardinals as Jhonny Peralta makes his second rehab start for Palm Beach.
