Jupiter, FL - The Palm Beach Cardinals (59-48, 19-21) gave up three runs in the fourth inning to give the Clearwater Threshers (60-51, 22-19) a 6-1 victory.
Connor Jones got the start on Friday evening and lasted only 3.2 innings as he gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits, while walking two and striking out two. He also committed an error that led to a run as well.
The Threshers struck first in the third inning as Emmanuel Marrero hit a two out triple. He then scored as Mark Laird hit a high chopper to Jones behind the mound, Jones fielded it cleanly, but threw it away, allowing Marrero to score and make it a 1-0 game.
Jones got into trouble again in the fourth frame. Wilson Garcia and Jan Hernandez reached on singles to start the inning. Derek Campbell attempted a sacrifice bunt, but laid it down perfectly to turn it into a single and load the bases with nobody out. Jones then got Edgar Cabral to strike out for the first out. Jones got Grenny Cumana to hit a ground ball to Leobaldo Pina to get a force out at second, Andy Young then tried turning the double play, but threw it high allowing Hernandez and Garcia to score and make it a 3-0 game. Marrero then doubled in Cumana to make it a 4-0 game. Jones walked Laird to end his night and turn it over to Ramon Santos who got out of the inning but not before the damage was done.
The Cardinals scored in the bottom of the fifth as Pina and Blake Drake led off with back-to-back singles and advanced on a wild pitch. Jose Martinez then grounded out to second to drive in Pina and make it a 4-1 game.
Clearwater scored another run in the sixth and seventh innings to give them the 6-1 victory. Ian McKinney and Eric Carter tossed scoreless innings each in the loss.
