Carlson and Ascanio power Cards past Poodles, 5-2

AMARILLO, Tx. -- CF Dylan Carlson hit a pair of solo home runs, while SS Rayder Ascanio added a three-run blast, powering the Springfield Cardinals (13-13, 43-53) past the Amarillo Sod Poodles (14-12, 48-46), 5-2, on Wednesday night.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
-CF Dylan Carlson came out swinging with a leadoff home run to open the top of the first and lift the Cardinals into the 1-0 lead right away.

-SS Rayder Ascanio opened the lead to 4-0 with a three-run blast to left field in the top of the fourth.

-Carlson struck again in the fifth, pelting another solo home run off the batter's eye in center field, stretching the lead to 5-0 with his second homer of the night.

-Amarillo got on the board with a two-out, two-run double from CF Edward Olivares in the bottom of the fifth, shaving the deficit to 5-2.

-The Sod Poodles threatened in the eighth when they loaded the bases with one out. RHP Ronnie Williams took over on the mound and induced an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play from 1B Kyle Overstreet, getting the Cardinals out of the jam unscathed.

-RHP Kodi Whitley slammed the door with a perfect ninth inning, tallying his sixth save of the season.

NOTABLES:
-CF Dylan Carlson notched his first-career multi-home run game with his two solo shots. He has moved into the league lead with 16 home runs on the season.

-SS Rayder Ascanio added a double to his three-run homer, finishing the night 2x4 and extending his hitting streak to seven games.

-1B Zach Kirtley also extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single.

-RHP Johan Oviedo dealt 6.0 innings with just two runs on three hits, four walks and four strikeouts. It is his fourth straight start in July limiting opponents to three runs or fewer.
