Drillers open Second Half with 5-1 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Tulsa Drillers started the Second Half of the season with a 5-1 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,725 fans at ONEOK Field on Tuesday night.

Cardinals LHP Jacob Evans (L, 0-5) and Drillers RHP Andrew Sopko (W, 3-0) alternated scoreless stanzas through the first two and a half innings, before the Drillers (1-0, 35-36) broke through in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and two away, Evans lost CF Yusniel Díaz to an RBI walk, forcing in the first run of the game. LF Jacob Scavuzzo then followed with a three-run double into the left field corner, clearing the bases and increasing the Tulsa lead to 4-0.

Sopko rolled along with scoreless work through his first five frames, but the Cardinals (0-1, 33-38) got on the board in the sixth. With one away, SS Tommy Edman rifled his second single of the night, extending his on-base streak to 25 games. 2B Edmundo Sosa then sent a double to left field, moving Edman to third base. Edman sprinted home on an RBI groundout by CF Lane Thomas, shaving the Drillers lead to 4-1.

RHP Ramon Santos kept the Cardinals within striking distance, tossing 4.1 perfect innings from the final out in the third inning through the end of the seventh. He retired all 13 batters that he faced in order, striking out five of them in the fantastic performance.

However, Tulsa padded the lead in the eighth against LHP Colton Thomson. With one away, 1B Luke Raley and 3B Connor Joe knocked consecutive doubles to add a late run and account for the 5-1 final favoring Tulsa.
