DUNEDIN, Fla. (May 18, 2017) - Charlotte Stone Crabs second baseman Brandon Lowe picked up three hits Thursday in a 7-1 loss to the Dunedin Blue Jays at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Lowe also connected on two doubles and is now hitting .349 for the season to lead the Stone Crabs (19-21). He is 10-for-21 with nine walks in his last seven games. Lowe is now tied with Daytona's Nick Senzel for the league lead in doubles (15).
Charlotte got an early lead in the first when Lowe pulled a double to right field. Jake Cronenworth followed with a single to right to plate Lowe and make it 1-0 Stone Crabs.
With the score still 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Blue Jays (23-18) center fielder Andrew Guillotte singled to right before Cavan Biggio was hit by a pitch. Troy Tulowitzki then singled to center to score Guillotte and tie the game at one. Max Pentecost followed with a single up the middle to give Dunedin a 2-1 lead.
Up by that count in the sixth, Blue Jays catcher Mike Reeves singled before Josh Almonte walked.
That chased Charlotte starter Génesis Cabrera (3-4), who allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out a season-high six.
With runners at first and second, D.J. Davis bounced a ball to first base that Stone Crabs first baseman Dalton Kelly misplayed. That allowed Reeves to score and make it 3-1. Charlotte reliever Greg Maisto walked the next two batters to force in a run and give Dunedin a 4-1 lead.
The Blue Jays tacked on three more runs against the Stone Crabs' bullpen in the eighth inning to polish off a 7-1 win.
Dunedin starter Ryan Borucki (1-1) went 5.1 innings, allowing only one run on six hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
The Stone Crabs return to Port Charlotte to open a 10-game homestand Friday. Blake Bivens (2-3, 3.80) gets the start at 6:35 p.m. against Jorge Cavanerio (0-1, 2.31) of the Jupiter Hammerheads. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. on the Stone Crabs Baseball Network.
