PORT SAINT LUCIE, Fla. (June 25, 2017) - For the second time in the series, the Charlotte Stone Crabs scored 13 runs on 17 hits to beat the St. Lucie Mets 13-10 at First Data Field.
Sunday's win earned the Stone Crabs (3-1, 34-38) the series victory. Charlotte mounted 39 runs on 55 hits in the four games against St. Lucie (1-3, 34-38).
Down 4-0 in the third, the Stone Crabs began a furious comeback. Shortstop Jake Cronenworth and third baseman Peter Maris both singled with one out. Brandon Lowe followed with a double to right to score Cronenworth and make the score 4-1. Brett Sullivan then singled up the middle to plate a pair and make the count 4-3.
After the Mets added a run in the bottom of the third to make it 5-3, David Olmedo-Barrera laid down a bunt single to start the fourth. Thomas Milone followed with a double to right to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Cronenworth then singled to left before Maris lined a hit to center to tie the game at five. Lowe followed by lining a ball to right which was misplayed, allowing Cronenworth to score and make the score 6-5 Charlotte. Sullivan responded by lining a single to left, driving home both runners to extend the Stone Crabs' lead to 8-5.
Still up by that margin in the fifth, Olmedo-Barrera walked before Milone reached on a fielding error. Cronenworth followed by stroking a single to center to make the score 9-5. After a Maris hit loaded the bases, Lowe flew out to center to push across Milone and give Charlotte a 10-5 lead. With runners at the corners and one out, Sullivan connected on his third hit, an RBI knock to center to make the score 11-5. Dalton Kelly followed by dropping a single to right to cap the rally and give the Stone Crabs a 12-5 advantage.
Leading by seven in the top of the sixth, Maris singled with two outs before Lowe lined his second double to the left field corner. That brought home Maris to make the count 13-5.
The Mets rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Charlotte closer Drew Smith worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save.
Stone Crabs relief pitcher Dalton Moats (2-0) worked a perfect bottom of the fifth to earn the win.
Sullivan tied a career high with five RBI in the game, while Maris went 4-for-6 with a career high four runs. Cronenworth and Sullivan both finished with three hits, while Lowe drove in three.
