The Lake County Captains (Cleveland Guardians High-A Affiliate) are excited to offer elementary and middle school teachers and their students the chance to become All-Star Readers and participate in Skipper's Reading Challenge. This program promotes literacy and reading comprehension in and out of the classroom for traditional and non-traditional K-8 schools.
Learning to read begins at birth, and as a parent or caregiver, you are your child’s first and best teacher. Build a strong foundation for early literacy by incorporating five simple practices into your daily routine: Talk, Sing, Read, Write, and Play. These small but powerful interactions provide the essential tools every child needs to become a lifelong reader.
Skipper's Reading Challenge is a free, turn-key, incentive-based program that aims to help students discover the joys and rewards of reading. As students work towards their reading goals set by their educators, they will earn prizes along the way. In previous seasons, Skipper's Reading Challenge had readers from Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake Counties, with over 2,000 teachers and nearly 36,000 students participating.
Upon completing the program, students will be rewarded with a complimentary ticket to a Lake County Captains home game. Participating teachers will also receive a complimentary ticket.
